Don't Let Life Pass You By

I sank down on the soft green grass growing on the edge of the pond, and immediately felt my entire body relax. A wave of tension passed through me as I began taking in the sounds of nature; the wind in the leaves, birds chirping, and the hints of a half-dozen other slow lazy sounds of summer that surrounded me.
I was here because I had blocked this time on my calendar at the beginning of the week as, “Reflection Time.” This is time that I dedicate each quarter to pause, reflect and check in on my progress towards my goals in both my business and personal life.
After some minutes passed and the novelty of entering into a quieter realm and rhythm had faded, I began to feel a slow, growing anxiety within. “What if I get bored?” I wondered. Ironically, my fear of boredom and being with myself without the distraction of business was something that I attempted to avoid in my life.
I allowed the question to remain unattended to, like an empty coat hanger in my mind as I turned my thoughts and attention towards reviewing the last three months.
I sat by the pond journaling and reflecting; allowing my mind to quietly take in the surrounding beauty. I imagined ideas and possibilities for the future. I felt my pulse quicken and my heart open up as ideas and inspirations began to race through me.
And to think, it was just a few hours earlier, my mind had played an on-going internal debate, “Why on are you taking an extra 20 minutes to get to the pond and to be in nature?” “It would be WAY more efficient to just sit down at your desk, or sit outside in the yard.” “What are you doing? You don’t have time to pause and reflect on your business and personal life today. Maybe it would be better to move this to another time slot next week, when there’s more time.”
My experience remains a testament to my ongoing discovery that the truly important things in life are rarely urgent - and are all too easily left unattended to AND under-nourished. Meanwhile, the urgent things like making money, paying bills, making the next meeting, putting out the current fire get all my attention and bandwidth.
And yet this simple, important experience made all the difference. I left the pond with a journal full of new insights for my business and personal life, a soaring spirit, and a heart bubbling over with creative thoughts and inspirations.
P.S. The photo above is a real, live photo of me (or more accurately stated, my feet, lol) relaxing and reflecting by the pond that day : )
